Comments about Salewa Alp Trainer Mid GTX - Men's:

The boot I am taking to Nepal. I am heading to Dolpo and Makalu regions for 2 months later in the year, and these boots are the ONLY footwear option I am taking with me. Straight out of the box I threw them on my feet and gave them an absolute hammering for 3 days. No hint of a blister, even tho every daylight hour was spent either jogging across the rocky Kaimanawa tops, following the untracked river valleys ( dozens of crossings), or somewhere inbetween, at times slogging through fresh snow drifts. In fact, I love these boots so much I slept with them. But purely to stop them freezing solid after all the river crossings :-). They give your feet good protection from the rocks, while still being light and comfy enough to run in, despite the stiff sole. Buy them.

Comments about Salewa Alp Trainer Mid GTX - Men's:

The boots are narrower than my previous boots, but they are actually a bit longer, and the narrower width is comfortable, like a snug-fitting running shoe, and the toe area is roomy. The bottom is good and stiff, and ankle support feels solid. Most amazing part is no blisters, barely even hot spots right out of the box, at least for my size 13 medium width feet, and the first 10 miles or so of day hiking. The two layer foot pad allows you to adapt to your sock thickness. And I get a lot of compliments on how groovy they look.

        • Alp Trainer Mid GTX - Men's

          Q:

How does this boot differ from the Salewa Mountain trainer mid?
          Asked on 6/6/2012 by Anonymous

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

The Alp Trainer Mid GTX falls under Salewa's Hike Approach category which combines the comfort and support of hiking boots with the technical features of approach footwear. It is more lightweight and flexible than the Mountain Trainer which falls under the Alpine approach category. The Mountain Trainer is stiffer and has a PU shock absorber in the midsole which improves comfort over long distances.

          Q:

How do you determine which insole to remove? The yellow or the black? Is each insole designed for a particular use?
          Asked on 4/9/2012 by Anonymous

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

Salewa offers the "Multi-Fit Footbed" to fit the volume of your foot in their footwear. The black is more durable and should always be used as your main insole. The yellow footbed can be taken out if you need more room. It's purpose is to reduce the volume a few millimeters. With both insoles Salewa calls it a 'medium fit'. With the yellow insole removed Salewa calls it a 'wide fit'.

        • Alp Trainer Mid GTX - Men's

          Q:

Are these boots warm enough for snowy hikes and climbs high up in the Colorado mountains around June?
Asked on 3/5/2012 by Fil from Champaign, Il

          1 answer

          • Staff Reviewer

            A:

The Alp Trainer Mid GTX is not an insulated boot, but it is (GTX) GoreTex. GoreTex will keep your feet dry and protected from the moisture.
When warmth is concerned, I wear a standard GTX boot here in the UT mtns in the dead of winter to snowshoe. Because I'm involved in something so active I never notice cold feet.
To answer your question... YES. These boots will handle June hikes/climbs with ease. Maybe take a little thicker sock to change into should you need it.

Technology Used In The Alp Trainer Mid GTX - Men's

        Gore-Tex

Gore-Tex: Guaranteed to Keep You DryGORE-TEX fabrics are created by laminating a GORE-TEX membrane to high-performance textiles, then sealing them with an innovative solution for durable waterproof protection. Billions of microscopic pores in the membrane allow the fabric to be highly waterproof by preventing water droplets from entering, and highly breathable by allowing vapor from the inside to escape.
