Description

The Alpine Light Down Series are Mont-Bell's highly functional mid-layers that flaunt characteristics essential for comfortable backcountry activity: aggressive warmth to weight ratio, while maintaining exceptional compressibility. The secret to the warmth of these garments not only relies on the high lofting 800 fill power goose down, but the inherent wind shedding ability of the 30-denier Ballistic Nylon shell. By blocking a large percentage of wind, a relatively light layer is able to conserve the heat your body naturally produces.

Comments about Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's:

    This jacket feels great!
It has a super soft shell that is very comfy and fits me very nicely. Im 6ft and 185 lbs-bought the large. It has almost double the amount of down fill that the patagonia down sweater has, and therefore quite a bit warmer. in addition to the nice deep hand warmer pockets, it has 2 large internal stash pockets. The neck collar is fleece lined and fits nice and snug on my size 16.5 neck and keeps the warm air in.
I've only owned this jacket for a few months and used on only 1 backpack trip (in the 20 degree range)so cant speak to the long term durability. I have stuffed it a few times though and had 1 or 2 feathers poke out. I pulled them back in and rubbed the nylon spot as the directions say to.

The only thing I would like to see on this jacket is the weight cut down by an ounce or two. The large weighs rite at about 15 oz's (including stuff sack) on my scale. I researched this quite a bit and its difficult to find a jacket in this price range (sale price range that is) that has all the same features and weighs less. (full zip, same down fill, 4 pockets, bottom hem drawcord)

By the way, great service from Campsaver as usual!

    • Compressability is good
    • Freedom of movement
    • Quality stitching

    Cons

    • Fill weight is too low

    Best Uses

    • Mid-Layer

Comments about Mont Bell Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's:

This is an average quality 800 fill down mid-layer jacket. It fits well and doesn't hinder range of motion for climbing etc... It is light and reasonably warm when worn with a shell.

Comments about Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's:

I've had this jacket for about 5 months. This is a great lightweight down jacket. It is exceptionally warm for it's weight. Weighs nothing when backpacking and hiking. But looks good around town too. I've yet to see one single feather poke through. I've worn it down in the teens with a tee shirt and was warm. But the best unexpected thing was how well it was thought out and put together. The front pockets are larger and deep so things won't fall out. The inside pockets are big enough for water bottles and are also very deep. The fabric has shed light rain so far. I'm 5'-8" and 170 lbs. I ordered the Large and it fits good for me. I wanted to be able to layer under it with a sweater though. The sleaves are a bit long. But I want that for reaching in active moments. I'd rather have that then too short. Hope this helps.

      Questions & Answers

Q & A For The Mont Bell Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's

Technology Used In The Alpine Light Down Jacket - Men's

      Baffled Construction

Baffles are chambers created between the outer shell and inner liner of a sleeping bag or jacket. These chambers hold the insulation and create an even distribution, preventing unwanted grouping of insulation. There are different types of baffles. A "stitched-through" baffle joins the outer shell and inner liner together by means of direct stitching. Heat loss through seams is a disadvantage of the stitched through baffle. Optimal warmth is achieved through the use of a "box wall" style baffle. This method uses additional material between the outer and inner materials to create a wall that unites the two layers and creates a slightly larger and more uniform baffle. Different variations on the box wall positioning create a variety of advanced baffle systems.

      Down Insulation

Water foul, like geese and duck, actually provide one of the most efficient forms of insulation available. Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. It is longer lasting and much more compressible than synthetic insulation. A disadvantage of down insulation is its loss of efficiency in wet conditions. It will also take much longer to dry than a synthetic insulation. Down is available in different fill powers. Fill power is defined by the amount of loft that is gained under loft test conditions. The higher the fill power number the greater the loft and the greater the performance of the down insulation. Fill powers may range from 500 fill to 900+ fill power.
