The Alpine Light Down Series are Mont-Bell's highly functional mid-layers that flaunt characteristics essential for comfortable backcountry activity: aggressive warmth to weight ratio, while maintaining exceptional compressibility. The secret to the warmth of these garments not only relies on the high lofting 800 fill power goose down, but the inherent wind shedding ability of the 30-denier Ballistic Nylon shell. By blocking a large percentage of wind, a relatively light layer is able to conserve the heat your body naturally produces.

I am 5' 9" 165 lbs. Chest size ~41. What would be the better size for me, large or medium? I intend to wear this under a storm shell.

  I think a medium would be a better fit for layering. The Alpine Light fits a little looser than some of the other Mont Bell pieces. I am 6'1", 205 lbs with a 43 chest and I wear a large. It fits me just right.

Technology Used In The Alpine Light Down Vest - Men's

Down Insulation

Water foul, like geese and duck, actually provide one of the most efficient forms of insulation available. Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. It is longer lasting and much more compressible than synthetic insulation. A disadvantage of down insulation is its loss of efficiency in wet conditions. It will also take much longer to dry than a synthetic insulation. Down is available in different fill powers. Fill power is defined by the amount of loft that is gained under loft test conditions. The higher the fill power number the greater the loft and the greater the performance of the down insulation. Fill powers may range from 500 fill to 900+ fill power.
