Comments about Apoc Jacket - Men's:

The big hood has adjustments but still blocks vision as it does not articulate. Problem solved by wearing a cap with visor.I'd still probably replace this with the same model when it eventually wears out.

        Q:

I have done tons of reading on Neoshell and cannot find out how durable or how waterproof the jacket is. The company claims it has a 10,000 grams of waterproof which is sufficient, but has anyone used this on a weekend hike or longer and stayed dry? Also, how does the material hold up to abuse like a branch rubbing up against the fabric? Most of the reviews I have read come from skiers, would any hikers like to pipe in?

          A:

I have no personal experience with these jackets, so I asked Westcomb and this is what they said:

"While Neoshell meets the industry standard for waterproof (10, 000- it actually comes in at 12, 000), the biggest benefit to a backpacker like yourself would be breathability and comfort when moving. Gore fabrics are 2-3 times more waterproof which comes into play when you are in situations where you are pushing water through fabric (ie. backpack straps) Durability depends on face fabric and the APOC utilizes a strong outershell fabric. Skiers run the risk of tearing any jacket when skiing in the trees, but I doubt that an errant tree branch will cause too much harm to it unless you find yourself walking into trees! I have personally used my Westcomb Neoshell Jacket (Switch) as my super comfy rainshell in the summers of CO and as my technical hardshell ski jacket in the winter. "

        Q:

I'm torn between the APOC and Switch LT, both from Westcomb. I have 12 years on my Arcteryx Alpha SV and want a similar bomber shell that I will confident in taking on a Denali climb, Cascade climbs or backcountry skiing. I'm used to Napolean pockets so that doesn't dissuade me from the Switch LT, but is the APOC thicker and more durable? Thx.

The Apoc is a much lighter and thinner material. The Switch is thicker and heavier.

Does the bottom hem cinch tight all the way around or just in the back similar to the Specter LT?

I looked and tried on the jacket and it had drawstrings on both hips that tighten from the back, but it tighten the whole jacket all the way around. It seemed to tighten tight enough. Thanks!

The Westcomb Apoc Jacket only cinches in the back, not all the way around.

        Q:

i was wondering if you could shed some light on the fit that Westcomb manufacture. I'm looking at getting either an M or an L but can't decide because i don't know whether i'll end up buying the jacket either too big or too small. i like to be able to layer underneath the jacket e.g.. icebreaker, fleece etc. In other words does Westcomb take into account layering requirements for winter use and therefore allow this extra room into their sizes.
your prompt response to this question would be greatly appreciated. thanks

Westcomb definitely allows room for layering. Also, your size also effects it. Any midlayer fleece or icebreaker will fit nicely. I would consider Westcomb a standard fit.

My size is somewhere between a medium and a large. Most of my jackets are size medium, but the medium was too tight in the Apoc. I had to return the jacket for a large, which is perfect. If you want to layer, I would definately go one size up, as the Apoc has a sporty, hugging fit. Looks great though! I love this jacket. It was a toss up between the Apoc and the Montane Superfly XT. I got both. Also, I'd like to add that the staff at campsaver couldn't have been more helpful - a great company!
