Description

The Montane Black Ice Jacket is one of the most versatile boxwall down jackets ever created. It’s both light in weight and extremely functional. It features boxwall panels that have been designed to follow the contours of the body, reducing the number of cold spots and creating even panels of high quality goose down. To really help protect the down from the weather and rucksack strap compression it has an extra layer of PRIMALOFT protection over the shoulders, hood top and forearms. The Black Ice is perfect for cold winter days and nights either on the move or resting. Should you get caught out in rain, the outer fabric also has a highly weather resistant inner coating ensuring that the down plumes will stay dry and continue lofting.
  • FREEFLOW Ultra-Lite 45g/m outer shell waterproof to a minimum of 800mm hydrostatic head
  • PEAQ Down liner that is exceptionally comfortable next to the skin, highly breathable and fast drying
  • Classic boxwall construction on the arms, body and hood
  • Vertical control baffle arrangement on arms preventing down migration during high activity
  • Fully adjustable mountaineering helmet compatible hood with storm vision wired peak, including non-whip face aperture drawcords
  • Articulated arms for reach high body movement
  • Storm protection on inner hood, hem and hand pockets providing additional protection for the down fill and continued comfort when working hard
  • Two way tough moulded centre front zipper for deep freeze conditions
  • Internal ‘sleeping bag’ type neck baffle and internal halfwaist drawcord to prevent spindrift entry and core body heat loss
  • Internal fine mesh security pocket and internal water bottle warmer pocket
  • SCOTCHLITE reflective roundel details
  • Cuffs featuring mitt grab tabs
  • Own waterproof storage / stuff sac
  • As with all MONTANE clothing, Freeflow fabric contains a Durable Water Repellency (DWR) as the first barrier to keeping you dry. Clean your garment in order to maintain this.
  • Down clothing ideally needs to be handwashed with care.
  • Wash in a mild soap in warm water 40C/110F. MONTANE recommends Nikwax Tec Wash.
  • DO NOT use fabric softeners, bleach or liquid detergent.
  • Rinse the product thoroughly after washing to remove any soap traces.
  • You must dry the product carefully in a tumble drier on a cool setting. Check regularly that the product is drying well and turn inside out. Never dry clean.
  • It will take some time to dry a down product thoroughly, even if the outer fabric is dry the down may not be.
  • MONTANE recommends a professional cleaning service if in any doubt.

Comments about Black Ice Jacket - Men's:

Definitely get a size up. It fits great over some layers and a shell that way, but still fits slip enough to wear alone. It is definitely an athletic fit, so maybe two sizes up if you are big for your height.

The visor and the internal nalgene pocket rock. It stuffs pretty small with the included stuff sack.

The zipper is atrocious at first and continues to get better with time. Try zipping and unzipping it a bunch before you find yourself in a situation wear you want to get in on quick in some cold weather. I was upset about the zipper at first, but it feels much better now. I still have a little trouble with it, but I expect that to go away completely with time.

Other than that, this jacket is perfect.

Comments about Black Ice Jacket - Men's:

Montane Black Ice has a number of clever and well executed features that place this jacket at the very top of garments in its category.
Let's start with the hood, the best I came across, very tall neck that allows for exceptional face coverage, large enough for helmet yet adjustments allow snug fit with or without helmet. Very good wired brim, together with the overall shape of the hood it provides impressive head/face protection yet unrestricted vision as the hood moves with the head.
Next are the waist and hem cords that completely stop entry of cold air, minimize dead air, and together with the tapered shape of the jacket and the body length provide fantastic warmth for the given weight of the jacket.
Worth mentioning is also dual zipper and button at the bottom that allow you to unzip the bottom of the jacket and button it up, creating neat opening for harness.
Add box wall construction, elasticized and adjustable cuffs, synthetic insulation where it matters (hood, shoulders and forearms), and you have what is arguably the best alpine jacket on the market in its category/weight. Needless to say I am very satisfied with it.
