Comments about Broad Peak II Jacket - Men's:

Good-looking jacket that isn't too puffy or too shiny, compared to competitors. It's also very lightweight and packable. I haven't used it in the dead of winter yet, but it's been fine in temps down to the teens. I'm not optimistic about using it in sub-zero temps next winter, though.

Mostly, the fit is great. I'm 5'8 and 170 pounds and usually fall between medium and large sizing in most tops. The medium in this coat fits me well, except for at the waist. The waist on this coat is tapered slightly, I assume in order to keep cold air from entering at the bottom. Other down coats I've owned have a drawstring at the bottom to adjust the fit. This one does not, and the default fit is a little tight on me.

Getting rid of that drawstring does save on weight, which seems to have been Mammut's overall goal. The hip pockets are shallow and lack zippers. The main zipper is small and fiddly. All of which make this a very lightweight jacket but are a trade-off for convenience and comfort.

Also, the main zipper is reversed from the American norm (Mammut is a Canadian company, I believe), which is slightly annoying for me.

I got this coat on sale for a good price, so I'll keep it. Again, it looks good and will be an excellent piece for bikepacking, due to its weight and small packed size. I'll probably be shopping for a colder-weather everyday coat next winter, though.

Comments about Broad Peak II Jacket - Men's:

I have extensive gear experiance in use and also design. I found this lite down jacket perfect for my all around alpine activity. While it has very lightweight fabric, a little care goes a lond way in prolonging use. As with most Mammut gear, it runs on the small side. Plenty of length in the sleeves and body, but runs small in the body, size up. Would not mind an extra half ounce of down either. Very good value on sale.

        Questions & Answers

        Q & A For The Mammut Broad Peak II Jacket - Men's

Technology Used In The Broad Peak II Jacket - Men's

        Baffled Construction

Baffles are chambers created between the outer shell and inner liner of a sleeping bag or jacket. These chambers hold the insulation and create an even distribution, preventing unwanted grouping of insulation. There are different types of baffles. A "stitched-through" baffle joins the outer shell and inner liner together by means of direct stitching. Heat loss through seams is a disadvantage of the stitched through baffle. Optimal warmth is achieved through the use of a "box wall" style baffle. This method uses additional material between the outer and inner materials to create a wall that unites the two layers and creates a slightly larger and more uniform baffle. Different variations on the box wall positioning create a variety of advanced baffle systems.

        Down Insulation

Water foul, like geese and duck, actually provide one of the most efficient forms of insulation available. Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. It is longer lasting and much more compressible than synthetic insulation. A disadvantage of down insulation is its loss of efficiency in wet conditions. It will also take much longer to dry than a synthetic insulation. Down is available in different fill powers. Fill power is defined by the amount of loft that is gained under loft test conditions. The higher the fill power number the greater the loft and the greater the performance of the down insulation. Fill powers may range from 500 fill to 900+ fill power.
