Comments about Chrome Jacket - Men's:
This is advertised as a ski jacket, but I'm not much for skiing. I bought this for wearing as a winter weather jacket, for getting around town when the temperatures are cold, working in the yard, shoveling snow, etc. For that, it works great.
The weather where I live has seen the wind chill temperatures at -40 several times this winter, and I was tired of being cold in my very old Columbia 3-in-1.
Wind chill has now been stricken from my vocabulary. This jacket completely blocks the wind. My hat, gloves, and pants all seems woefully inadequate now that I wear the Chrome.
The seams and stitching seem A+. The zippers are nice and tight, and their garages work great.
The neoshell exterior works as advertised for now. The jacket is only a month or so old, so I can't comment on how the DWR will hold up. For now, water beads right off. The insulation is soft, compressible, and very warm. As mentioned, I've stood around in -40 and all that gets cold are the parts of me not covered by the jacket.
I gave the thing 5 stars because it is extremely high quality, extremely warm, and extremely good looking, but I will admit there are a few aspects of the jacket that could be better:
1) The hood was clearly an afterthought. Stowed, it ends up pretty bulky around the neck. The plastic stays for the pullcords are probably going to show wear marks on the exterior eventually, as you can feel their profile through the fabric when stowed. It's kind of small. I guess it's probably better than nothing if you get caught in precipitation, but I'm not sure it's worth having to lug around all the rest of the time.
2) The pockets are really small and lacking in features. I like their placement, but I can't get a good pair of winter gloves into the hand pockets; just lighter weight gloves or mittens. I can fit an ipod into the interior chest pocket. An iPhone would probably fit, but this isn't 2009 anymore. My phone has a 5+" screen and doesn't fit. I can squeeze it into the Napoleon pocket, but I bet one of the newer "phablet" style phones wouldn't even go in there. As a media player pocket, the interior chest pocket has no accommodations for headphones, no elastic to help hold anything in place -- it's just a tiny little pocket. Basically, I keep a couple of dollar bills folded up in it.
3) It's easy to overheat in it. There are no pit zips, which makes sense given it's a ski jacket, not an alpine jacket. But its so warm that when temperatures get much above freezing, or the sun is out, or you go from outside to in a warmed up car, you can find yourself sweating. The high tech fabrics may help wisk away all the moisture generated during vigorous activities, but that doesn't mean you won't sweat. And you have to sweat through your shirts before it can get out through the jacket. Kind of a double-edged sword there, though. Either the jacket is warm or its not.
Overall, though, this thing is absolutely awesome for being comfortable in the cold. It looks sleek and minimalist and offers a nice brand alternative to the well knowns that everyone else is wearing. I got this on clearance, but would absolutely buy it at full price.
