Comments about Deer Park 30° Sleeping Bag (600 down):

Bought this as my first backpacking sleeping bag three seasons ago, have used it at least 100 nights, mostly in cold and wet situations. I'm 6'2" and weiged 305 when I got this, 250 now. It's a decent product, but if you are a bigger hiker looking for sub 3-pound bags, there are far better options out there. I have purchased four or five and will discuss at the end. I like this bag because it is has comfortable fabric and kept me warm on a couple sub-freezing nights (with clothes on). There is not a lot else good to say about it.
Why I don't like it- 1. I don't know the exact weights, but there is almost as much synthetic insulation as down in this bag, which BA mentions nowhere. The down is on top, the zipper area, sides, and extra foot baffle are all synthetic. There is not much down for the price of this bag, which makes it unnecessarily heavy and far less compressible. 2- The zipper snags at least 1 out of 4 pulls. Not a big deal, but if you need to pee or get out of your tent quickly, it is very hard to get out of this bag without the zipper most of the way down, as it is attached to the pad you can't crawl out the top (toward your tent wall) or wiggle out. 3-It is difficult to get the inflated, XL pad in this thing, and because the pad opening is at the top (it should have been designed on the side), you need almost 12 feet of length to slide this on quickly, so you have to do it outside- I usually set mine on the top of the tent and slide the pad in. This does not work in wet weather, so you end up in the tent trying to twist the pad in half, half-inflate it, etc. Just not worth it. 4-if you've never used a BA sleep system, I would not recommend it because it is really hard to bend your legs inside the bag unlike a normal bag where you can bend your legs all the way. This may not be an issue for some, but if you are pulling 15+ miles a day you may need a certain stretch or get a cramp and it is really hard to flex in here- or if you are like me, you like to sleep with your legs bent- not in this. It is also tight if you have wide shoulders and sleep in your side because it basically stretches into a triangle (shoulder apex) at that point.
If you are a bigger hiker, I highly recommend a quilt, and comparing the fill weight to the overall weight. Just get an air pad and a quilt- you will probably stay warm and be way more comfortable. The best deal is the Golite z30 long, but you can get a custom sized quilt from JRB,UGQ, enlightened (has the RevolutionX, made from cosmetic seconds fabric at a much lower price) that you will be happy with. All of these options have a much higher down fill power (how much the down expands) than the BA park series bags, and they all weigh a pound or more less. Or if you don't have time or cash to get a custom quilt, just buy a long mummy bag with a full zip (my favorite is the Marmot Hydrogen, which is pricey but roomy) and keep it unzipped with the zipper underneath you like a quilt. You can always attach a line with linelock, or even an elastic suspender, if you are worried about the quilt sides coming open while you sleep. Best of luck.

Comments about Deer Park 30° Sleeping Bag (600 down):

I was looking for comfort more than anything and I got it with this bag. This a is big sleeping bag that gives me room to roll around. The integrated sleeping pad helps to keep it laying flat even when you roll over at night. I paired this with a Qcore pad and all I can say is WOW. It is amazingly comfortable and very warm. Well worth the money.

          • Deer Park 30° Sleeping Bag (600 down)

            Q:

will the ExPed mat, 77.5 x 26 x 3.5 in, fit in the Big Angus Deer Park 30 degree long bag? For the bag, it says the pad should be 25 inches wide and this pad is listed at 26?

            • A:

Yes, it will be fine. The Exped DownMat 9 DLX (LW) fits fine in the Hogan Park, so it should work equally well in the Deer Park.

              A:

I'm not sure what pad you are referring to, but you are correct on the Big Agnes Deer Park. You'll need a pad with a 25 inch width. More than that and you may struggle to make it fit.
