Very comfortable and well designed pad. It does a good job of insulating you from the cold ground. The integrated pump is icing on the cake. My wife loved it so much we bought a second one.

Comments about DownMat 7 Sleeping Pad:

Already purchased one of these, LOVE IT, and purchased another one for my husband who asked for it (he doesn't like his since he used mine once). We have five various sleeping pads, but this is by far the best. We live in the Appalachians and like to hike all year around. This pad is very comfortable and warm during those 18 degree nights in the winter. Also, like the interior pump and will not put my mouth on another value to breathe in mildew and stagnant air. Don't like the Mylar sound noise of the Neoair. Also, thought about the Nemo. However, I could not get an answer on the R-value rating (must have at least 5 in the snow here) and foot pump is not really conducive to pumping in a backpacking tent (can't stand in ours and if it is snowing/raining). It is good in the summer to help reduce the rating of the sleeping bag needed especially if the overnight temps falls below 45 degrees. It is durable. We often tent on rocks and tree branches (not intentionally, it is the terrain here) and have not had a problem with leaks, pokes, etc. (have had the pad over 3 years). It is a compromise on weight. I try to keep under 25 pounds in the pack and am willing to give up a lot to carry this pad. Campsaver has great customer service (used their help on several occasions) and fast shipping.

          Q:

what are the dimensions of the various mats? I am a 5'4" woman. Would a small pad be long enough for my entire body? thanks

            A:

The dimensions of the various Exped DownMat 7 sleeping pads are as follows:
            Small - 64" X 20"
            Medium - 72" X 20"
            Large - 77.5" X 26"

Because 5'4" is exactly 64", you probably want to consider purchasing the medium at 72". The medium will give you extra space to ensure your feet won't dangle off the end while you're sleeping.

          • A:

The small is 64 inches by 21 inches, the medium is 70 inches by 20 inches, the long-wide is 76 inches by 26 inches. You would just barely fit on the small since 5'4 is exactly 64 inches. I would go with a medium to give you a couple of extra inches of room.

        • DownMat 7 Sleeping Pad

          Q:

Would an Exped DownMat 7 or DownMat 9 be good to use on nights where the temperature is in the 40's or 50's or are they intended to be used in temperature's that are below freezing.

            A:

These pads have a pretty high R Value, making them optimal for colder temperatures (ca -11º F / -24º C for the 7 model and -36º F / -38º C for the 9)/ You could still use these for the temperatures listed, but you may not want to sleep in a bag rated for really cold temps (or you could unzip if you got hot). You will want to consider weight as well. These will be a little heavier if you plan to pack them.

The main image for this product is showing varying sizes - It is not double layered. You can view dimensions by clicking on the sizing chart image below the main image on that product page.

Technology Used In The DownMat 7 Sleeping Pad

        R-Value

R-Value is a measurement of thermal resistance, or in other words, how well an insulator functions. A higher R-Value means more efficient insulation and a warmer product. For example, a highly insulated sleeping pad may have an R-Value of 5.7 or higher, making it good for four season use. An R-Value of 2 would indicate a much less efficient insulation and a sleeping pad that would be best for three season use.

        Inflatable Sleeping Pads

Inflatable sleeping pads utilize various cells or air chambers to provide a comfortable night's rest. An inflatable sleeping pad is different from a self-inflating sleeping pad, because it lacks the layer of expanding foam and will need to be inflated manually. A stuff sack or one of many inflating devices will speed up the process.
