I bought these shoes when I was a dork and went on a bouldering trip and forgot my regular shoes. They were the cheapest ones in the store and they were my size- at the time those were my only qualifiers. That was a few years ago and I still find myself using these shoes for hanging out on our garage wall where I want something comfortable and don't really need anything technical. They are terrible for smearing, edging, heel hooking or climbing anything steep, but if you're a beginner and just looking for a great basic shoe this is it. Plus your feet will still be foot-shaped after taking them off! These are the only shoes I never take off between climbs and I've romped around Bishop and JTree without changing into approach shoes. Buy them if you're just looking for a comfortable shoe. Don't buy them if you hate purple.

I just started indoor rock climbing a month ago, and so far these shoes have total met my needs. I like the hard pointed toe and comfy feel. Unfortunately, they are not so great to walk around in or stand in, but I expected that.

I couldn't have asked for a better first shoe. It is way better than the climbing gym rental!

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
