Comments about Glittertind 55 L Backpack:

I used a Bergans Viking II Compact extensively from the mid-1980s through the late 1990s, when I replaced it with an Arc'Teryx Bora 80. Last year, I wanted a smaller and lighter pack that was still capable of multi-day trips, and was excited to see the Bergans line back in the States. I ended up purchasing the Glittertind 55, after comparing it with the Bergans Helium 55 and several Osprey packs.

The SPINE suspension employed by the Glittertind is very impressive under load. My trips with it thus far have seen 30lb to 40lb loads, and the pack carried the weight effortlessly over some very tough terrain (multiple-thousand foot elevation gains/losses over two or three miles, rock scrambles, off-trail navigation). The award-winning suspension truly offers the reputed range and freedom of motion, produced no hot spots or pressure points, and operated silently (no squeaks!). The size large harness fit my torso very well (I am 6'2", with a measured torso length of 20"), and the range of adjustment is such that I keep finding new ways to tweak the suspension. I am still rather amazed at the balance the SPINE strikes between feeling firmly attached to you while not impeding your range of motion—a kind of well-grounded floating, for lack of better term.

My only concerns with this pack lie in the numerous features of the pack body, which have a subsequent weight penalty. These can either be a benefit (if you use them) or a drawback (if you espouse a strict "nothing more than absolutely necessary for operation" philosophy). All of these features can be applied to gear organization in such a way as to offset the need for some stuff sacks, and thereby cancel out some of the weight penalty:
    1. A U-shaped panel zips from the draft collar to above the sleeping bag compartment and back, allowing a panel load option. The panel is backed by a full-length and -width mesh pocket, which has been handy for stowing quick-access snacks or items I want to separate from the main load, but the weight is not necessary.
    2. The floating lid has a secondary "hidden" pocket on underside of floating lid, in which the rain cover was originally stored.
    3. The sleeping bag compartment is smaller than some other pack I tried. This could render the zipper and the interior drawstring divider unnecessary additions (read: weight penalty) unless the compartment is applied in some other way (kitchen? clothes? rain gear?).

One added feature that I very much appreciated was that Bergans included a rain cover with the pack--initially tucked into the "hidden" pocket under the floating lid.

All told, my size large Glittertind 55 tipped my scale at 5lbs even with tags still attached--twice the weight of the Helium 55 I had for comparison and above the range in which I was initially considering. I was provisionally willing to accept the extra weight in exchange for the impressive performance of the SPINE system, and am very glad I did—the trips I have done with this pack have quickly solidified its position as my favorite pack, and I can't wait to get out on the trail again this year.

While I was initially attracted to the bare minimalist/ultralight ethos so popular today, the reality for me is that a lot of my future trips will involve my kids and other families, so I need to make sure my gear can address the attendant 30-40lb load. The Glittertind allows me the confidence to take on any terrain with any load, with unparalleled comfort and control.

Also worthy of note, counsel and customer service from Bergans USA has been fantastic; they guided me through the pack selection process and offered their own experiences and anecdotes regarding the packs. When I first asked about the SPINE system on the Glittertind 55, the customer service contact at Bergans replied that he had used the Glittertind 55 himself with a 45+lb load and, "The pack was the most comfortable pack I have worn...I could really feel the [SPINE] system taking the load when landing hard on my feet. It took me a while to dial in the fit with many minor tweaks to the waist belt, shoulder straps, load lifters, and waist belt stabilizers, but once I found the magical spot I was able to focus on the trail rather than the heavy load on my back...My sleeping bag usually does find its home in the low compartment and my 0 degree bag [fits] into that space but I left the divider unzipped for easier access from the spindrift collar."
