Comments about Glittertind Wax Skis:

Follow-up review:
I have used this ski for two seasons now, and this is my go to ski for hitting trails through the woods. I used these mostly to go on hunting and hiking trails off the groomed path. Using these skis is nice for taking my dog on a walk through the woods. The floatation is good for a ski that still fits in a track. Likewise, I can use these instead of snowshoes so long as the snow isn't too powdery. At the beginning of the season I had backcountry three pins on these skis, which gave excellent control on some downhill sections of my routes. I was actually able to do some turns on these this season, as they have a slight curvature, enabling me to make some elongated arcing turns down the hills (Which was a blast). Moreover, the skis after waxing properly with glide wax, mostly Swix CH4, CH6 (cold winter!), gave exceptional glide for a metal edged ski. I would sometimes use these in the track at the local Nordic center as well, as I don't own a waxable track ski, and wanted to experiment with a waxable kick-zone. In contrast to my initial thoughts, they were actually faster than my waxless base track skis (So long as I kick waxed correctly). Also, I experimented with skating in these, which worked out pretty well too. Even with kick-wax I could still get a decent glide on most harder snow-packed surfaces while skating. When there was the freeze thaw crust in March, I was able to skate anywhere through the woods on these skis, which was an extremely efficient way of traveling through a Minnesota forest! By the beginning of March I experimented by putting some Salomon profil bindings on these, which made track skiing more enjoyable, since the edges of three-pin bindings sometimes hit on the edges of the tracks. I felt as though the profil bindings were more efficient than the three-pins, and seem to tour and skate better. I did notice a reduction in the control on downhill sections however, and making elegant tele-turns is more difficult, as weighting the back foot seems to be more important to get the rear ski to not just skid during a turn.

My conclusions after this year:

Pros:
1. The ski is a good efficient touring ski rivaling the efficiency of some touring track skis in cold to moderate conditions
2. The ski is good at making long arcing turns on downhills, which allows for some slower tele-turns
3. Skid stopping with the ski is very easy if using backcountry three-pin bindings, thanks to metal edges
4. The skis skate very well due to a waxable base without any fishscales

Cons:
1. The ski is a compromise of on efficiency at warmer temperatures due to metal edges
2. The ski is a compromise on turn initiation due to longer arc of ski
3. The ski is a compromise on floatation in powder due to long and narrow profile
4. It is difficult to maneuver in the woods when traversing through brush due to length of ski
Best Use: A backcountry touring ski for rolling terrain where control and efficiency are your main objectives.

Comments about Glittertind Wax Skis:

I have been using this in Minnesota as my go to backcountry ski. I use voile 3-pins for touring and have the optional cable attachment for downhill. Using these for backcountry touring in the woods is a blast. I float on the snow pretty well, unless its powder. I ordered 205 cm and I weight 170 lb. I was planning on using them mostly with a backpack weighing around 30 lb. I have also used these at the local ski resorts to attempt to learn some tele downhill skills, and I have to say these skis always make me feel in control. Although truly carving turns takes a lot of finesse. But again, I have no prior tele experience. I am using Fischer bcx 675 boots, which have plenty of power to turn these with the 3-pin cable setup. Since these are a wax base, you will need to wax them. I carry two general purpose waxes as well as clister. Waxing seemed to be tricky, but mixing my 0 degree with my 30 degree seems to keep me covered over a broad range, and I have comparable grip to my karhu trak skis with the patterned base. Overall a very fun ski. This is the all-terrain mnt. bike of skis so to speak.
