Microspikes provide impressive traction on icy trails. They're relatively light, quick and easy to put on wearing gloves, stay in place all day, and I didn't slip on ice that felt steep while climbing Mt. Marcy and Phelps in the Adirondacks of NY. And, they don't catch on your gaiters or pants like regular crampons. I did encounter snow conditions that caused significant balling.
