      Comments about Mini Microfilter:

Just received this product the other day, and right out of the box I am very impressed with it. The first thing i did was test its capabilities by filtering about 12oz of water from one glass to another, which katadyn recommends doing anyway in order to clear out any ceramic dust. The flow rate I experienced was similiar to what i read on the companies website, which i believe is 0.5 liter per min. It took me about 30sec to filter the 12oz of water, and that was at a steady pumping rate( taking about a second to pull the handle up and another second to push it down). I've read multiple reviews where people complain about this being difficult to pump, and that it requires "super human strength" to operate. Now either the other reviewers are incredibly weak(no offense, honestly), or I simply don't know my own strength because I truely did not find it as difficult to operate as others have described. When I tested mine I set IT on the counter top in my kitchen to help stabilize it while i pumped, which to me is common sense as opposed to holding it in one had and pumping with the other. Maybe the people who wrote those reviews I read didn't do that, in which case I could see it being difficult to pump. I haven't used this in the field yet, but would expect it to operate in a similiar or the exact same way as when I tested it( granted that the water you are filtering is as close to clear as possible, typically the cleaner the water to begin with the easier it will be to filter since there are less particulates to clean out). I would also expect that when using this in the field that I would rest this on my knee or thigh while operating, which would make pumping much easier. This is the second filtering device I've owned and the first pump operated one. My other filter is a platypus gravityworks, which is excellent for its flow rate, ease of use, and ability to store, transport and filter large quantities of water. Its perfect for groups and while it is easy to set up and only weighs a few ounces more than the katadyn mini, is a little cumbersome for just solo use. Usually where i go hiking water is not scarce, so i don't need a system like the gravityworks all the time. I also plan on doing a lot of solo hiking, where i believe the katadyn mini will excel for its compact size and flow rate which is perfect for a single hiker/trail runner/backpacker. The design is great, simple, compact, easy to use, and field maintainable. Comes with a carrying bag that also contains a scuff pad for cleaning the filter, lubricant for the o-ring on the pump handle, a foam floatation device for keeping the pre-filter out of the muck while filtering, and the output hose( in an online video someone made a great suggestion of keeping the output hose inside a plastic bag while stored within the carying case, in order to prevent cross contamination). The hose with the pre-filter conveniently stores in the base of the filter, simply pop open the bottom cap and pull it out to use( there is a cut out for the hose so that you can close the cap and still run the hose out, and still be able to rest it on a firm base to pump from). With the filter being ceramic you must be careful as not to drop it, especially when it is not in the unit for it will almost certainly break. Another thing to be mindful of is that if you are going to be in an area where the temperatures will be below freezing, then you will need to take steps to prevent the filter from freezing and subsequently cracking. One thing you could do is sleep with it in your bag at night, and your body heat should prevent it from freezing. Overall a great product, good design, compact, field maintainable, simple to use, and NOT AS DIFFICULT TO OPERATE AS OTHERS DESCRIBE. This is perfect for solo use and up to a liter or two, of course you can filter as much as you want but if you plan on needing more water than that at a time then you'd probaly want to go with a filter that offers a higher flow rate. Again this is my first pump filter and can't compare its ease of pumping to other units, so it may be difficult compared to others but in my opinion being a first time user of a pump filter, this is not that tough. Happy Camping

        Comments about Mini Microfilter:

I regularly use and test different outdoor gear and wanted to like this filter because of the brand name and light weight. No matter how clean you make the ceramic filter, within seconds it requires almost super human effort to pump. 3 to 5 minutes per liter and you're exhausted. Don't bother with this. Get the Hiker or Hiker Pro. You'll be much happier with either. (30 seconds to 60 seconds per liter with a tenth the effort.)
