Comments about Marmot Montreal Coat - Women's:

I thought I had finally found "the one," but I didn't. I'm 5'6", 34A and usually wear an XS or S (depending on the brand & cut). I tried both an XS & S w/this coat, & neither worked (which is often the problem I run into shopping for coats & tops). My shoulders needed a size small, but then the rest of the coat (waist & butt area) was too big... I felt like I was wearing a coat that looked big enough to accommodate a pregnant belly. Conversely, I loved how the XS fit in the waist & butt, but it was way too tight in the shoulders & chest.

Am dying for a coat that is warm (this coat has the perfect length for someone 5'6"--not too long or too short...love that it covers the butt for warmth, but that it doesn't go all the way down to the knees) (but 800 down-fill would have been even better!) and cut w/a fit that flatters (this one did fit the bill), AND that my arms, shoulders, & back can also move comfortably in, like so my arms are comfortable while driving, or when I need to bend over to pick up bags of groceries or a kid, or if I need to lift my arms up for something, etc. Seeking warmth, style, & fit/functionability!! That being said, would LOVE to see this urban-style coat made w/raglan sleeves & w/some stretchy material (if that is even possible while still using down as the insulation) for better arm movement, as well as the chest being cut a little bigger, too. (With coats, I've found that in addition to the shoulder seams' measurement/width, it's also the chest size that has a big bearing on my arms' mobility). Like I said, I'm small-chested (34A), and the chest of the XS is 36.5", and the S is 37.5", but I even would have preferred 38.5" in the S.

Final critiques/notes: I liked the color (black) & overall style of the coat. It appeared well-made w/many practical/thoughful touches (e.g., deep, lined zipper pockets, lining around the cuffs, removable hood, etc.)... things that should be standard on all coats/designs, but just aren't! I REALLY liked that there isn't a flap (that you would then have to snap) over the zipper; I like to zip & go! I tried the coat outside to test for warmth. If you are just standing still in 20--30 degree weather then you'll still be chilly and so would want to make sure you layer up (in which case you'd probably want to size up for layering comfort). But if you're walking/moving in the 20-30 degree temp, then just a sweather or heavy shirt would probably do you fine. Also, I MIGHT have kept the S if the quilting right around the front waist/pockets had been smaller. It was here that they did the widest panels/sections of quilting. Had they done narrower here like they had elsewhere on the coat, it probably would have decreased some of the poochiness/largeness in this area. (Or similarly, if they had taken the coat in an inch or two @ the waist, but kept the shoulders the same size, it would have fit me great!) Bottom line: I really liked this coat, but it just didn't fit me right :( If you are 5'6", small-chested, between 110--120 lbs and evenly proportioned, then the XS will probably fit you; 120--130 lbs, go for the S.

          Questions & Answers

          Q & A For The Marmot Montreal Coat - Women's

Technology Used In The Montreal Coat - Women's

          Baffled Construction

Baffles are chambers created between the outer shell and inner liner of a sleeping bag or jacket. These chambers hold the insulation and create an even distribution, preventing unwanted grouping of insulation. There are different types of baffles. A "stitched-through" baffle joins the outer shell and inner liner together by means of direct stitching. Heat loss through seams is a disadvantage of the stitched through baffle. Optimal warmth is achieved through the use of a "box wall" style baffle. This method uses additional material between the outer and inner materials to create a wall that unites the two layers and creates a slightly larger and more uniform baffle. Different variations on the box wall positioning create a variety of advanced baffle systems.

          Down Insulation

Water foul, like geese and duck, actually provide one of the most efficient forms of insulation available. Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. It is longer lasting and much more compressible than synthetic insulation. A disadvantage of down insulation is its loss of efficiency in wet conditions. It will also take much longer to dry than a synthetic insulation. Down is available in different fill powers. Fill power is defined by the amount of loft that is gained under loft test conditions. The higher the fill power number the greater the loft and the greater the performance of the down insulation. Fill powers may range from 500 fill to 900+ fill power.
