2007 Outside Magazine pack of the year! The Ganite Gear Nimbus Meridian is a top loader with a floating lid/fanny pack and a single vertical zipper front access panel. The Nimbus Meridian was specifically designed to withstand the rigors of the 10,000 miles of hiking extreme pack tester Justin Lichter did in 2006. Granite Gear utilizes the newly released RiRi water resistant tooth zippers for the fanny pack lid and the front access panel because they offer superior durability and water resistance to any other zipper we have seen. Reflective material on the daisy chains and on the shoulder straps insure hikers will be seen when road hiking at night, they will also make it easier to locate the pack in the dark. For slack packing strip off the lid and use it as a fanny pack. Built with the same frame and harness as our award winning Nimbus Ozone the Meridian pack offers the rare combination of durability, convenience, versatility, and comfort in an ultralight trail pack.

Comments about Nimbus Meridian Pack (3800 cu in):

I bought this a couple of years ago for some long distance mountain walks in Europe. I was taken by the favourable reviews and the pack arrived as described. On day 3 of the first expedition, the GR20 in Corsica - a 190km trek through rough granite mountains, the screw/bolt attaching the pack to the frame worked loose and was lost. I wired the frame back on with some pliers and completed the walk. Maybe this was the reason but the pack felt unbalanced on the climbing/scrambling sections although the walk was completed in poor weather and the gear was well protected from the elements. I was carrying about 35lbs including tent, food and water and it was certainly comfortable apart from those sections where I would have preferred more stable carry. I have been unable to source a replacement screw so it has joined the rucksack cemetery in the garage. I have returned to using lighter, smaller packs for my more regular 2/3 day expeditions and I am debating whether to buy a less complex pack for long distance treks later this year.

    My choice of bag

Comments about Nimbus Meridian Pack (3800 cu in):

I like how it's decently light with a decent volume. Sure it's not 2lbs, but the material and especially the webbing is stronger than you'll find in the trace. Also, it comes with the lid/hip pack rather than making you buy one. I usually go without it and it cuts down the weight an extra 1/2 lbs. If you need a daypack, consider the Sea to Summit ultrasil bag. It'll do in a pinch.
The thing I hate most about the pack is that near the bottom where the zipper meets the pack, there's no seal. In other words, it's a small space where items can fall out. If you have small items like headlamps, compasses, fire starters, small knife, be sure to keep them in a small bag otherwise the person behind you will be "gifted" with gear

Comments about Nimbus Meridian Pack (3800 cu in):

I purchased this pack for use on a 200 mile hike planned for the summer. While not the lightest pack, I thought it was a good combination of comfort verses weight. I was disappointed when the pack I received weighed six ounces over its spec sheet. I contacted Granite Gear's excellent customer service and was informed that they had changed to a heavier fabric on the packs. However, the deal breaker for me was the nonfunctional load lifters. My torso size was in the middle for the regular frame size, but the frame is just too short for the load lifter straps to work properly and shift weight off the shoulders and onto the comfortable hip belt. Granite Gear is obviously aware of the problem because they tried to increase the height of the straps by running them through the floating lid, but I didn't find it effective. I think there are better packs out there that way substantially less, but if you are set on a granite gear pack, I'd suggest the nimbus ozone instead. It has the same suspension system and volume of the nimbus meridian, but weighs almost a pound less.
