So far, I've used this pack for week long excursions with my scout troop. As a leader, I usually end up carrying a lot more than I'd like to and the Palisade handles it comfortably. The last trip was a week long hike and camping trip on the Olympic Coast in WA. Lots of rain. Lots of beach hiking. The pack was a champ, even carrying almost 70 lbs. It held up well through the rain, sand, and salt and never seemed a burden. This is an awesome pack that fits snug and carries well. I highly recommend it.

If you need a big pack, put this one on your tryout list. I've used it for weeklong trips in Yellowstone and Grand Canyon, plus some overnight mountaineering trips. I can't imagine a more comfortable way to carry a 50 lb load on your back, and my guess is the Palisade can handle even more with ease.The suspension works extremely well. The straps are wide and padded with a dense foam, so they don't collapse. The hip belt is very rigid and adjustable, so it transfers the load straight to your hips. I've done a little scrambling with the pack, and it snugged up securely to my back for a stable load. The zippers are water resistant, as is the pack fabric, so I don't bother with a pack cover. The rear, vertical pocket zipper can snag if you have the main packbag crammed full or the compression straps sucked down hard. You can detach the lid for a largish fanny pack, but I think it works better when worn over the shoulder like a messenger bag. Ice ax and ski pole loops are very helpful, and the compression straps accommodate snowshoes.If you're shopping other backpacks in this size and price range, the Palisade definitely deserves a look. Gregory's attention to detail makes this pack shine.
