Description

The Big Agnes Pitchpine 45 Sleeping Bag is the lightest Big Agnes Sleeping Bag around. If you were to use the Big Agnes Clearview Mummy pad and Pitchpine together you'd have a combined bag and pad weight of only 2 lbs! The Pitchpine achieves this weight by using 800 Fill Goose Down, a mummy shape and ultralight fabrics. The Big Agnes Pitchpine uses a mummy pad in either the long or regular length. For a true ultralight setup, check out the Clearview Pad or Air Core Pad.

Just returned from a 6 week bicycle tour CO-UT-NV-SanFran. I forgot to bring a warm hat, but we had many nights down to 34' and I stayed warm with a light polypro set of long undies. Zipper problem is more that when you unzip it, it comes completely apart and then you can't zip it up in the middle of the night without waking yourself up to concentrate both hands on it. I used my spare pair of bike shorts as my night cap!

I bought this pack for it's small stuff size. It says that it was designed to work with their pad, but it should say that it is recommended. Bottom does not have any fill - just a light nylon bottom. I am relatively new to this and that surprised me. I will be ordering the pad in the near future. I aslo expected a bit more from the stuff sac at this price.

If you are going light and want a large bag this is the one. It's not intended for a full three seasons in the higher elevations but does great in warmer weather. (Some silk lj's help in cooler weather).

Baffled Construction

Baffles are chambers created between the outer shell and inner liner of a sleeping bag or jacket. These chambers hold the insulation and create an even distribution, preventing unwanted grouping of insulation. There are different types of baffles. A "stitched-through" baffle joins the outer shell and inner liner together by means of direct stitching. Heat loss through seams is a disadvantage of the stitched through baffle. Optimal warmth is achieved through the use of a "box wall" style baffle. This method uses additional material between the outer and inner materials to create a wall that unites the two layers and creates a slightly larger and more uniform baffle. Different variations on the box wall positioning create a variety of advanced baffle systems.

Down Insulation

Water foul, like geese and duck, actually provide one of the most efficient forms of insulation available. Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. It is longer lasting and much more compressible than synthetic insulation. A disadvantage of down insulation is its loss of efficiency in wet conditions. It will also take much longer to dry than a synthetic insulation. Down is available in different fill powers. Fill power is defined by the amount of loft that is gained under loft test conditions. The higher the fill power number the greater the loft and the greater the performance of the down insulation. Fill powers may range from 500 fill to 900+ fill power.
