Comments about Salute 34 Backpack (2075 cu in):

I'm used to osprey and gregory packs and this one is just a bit different than i was expecting but not in a bad way. it carries weight exceptionally well and the S zipper is a fabulous idea. my only complaints are the size of the hip belts and that the lumbar region of the pack is too narrow.

the pockets on the hip belt are small and they dont seem to be as wide as osprey or gregory's designs. i'm not sure how to explain this other than to say normally when the hip belts are buckled on a pack they are closer to the front of my hips as opposed to the back... with this pack it's a little difficult to use the pockets because they are angled toward the rear. this could be a result of the lumbar region being narrower than other packs.

this is definitely not a deal breaker as this pack is great in every other way but it is a slight annoyance, especially when this pack cost as much as it does.

Comments about Salute 34 Backpack (2075 cu in):

There's a lot going on with this pack. There are so many features that it would be hard to touch on all of them in one review. My overall impression is that this is a very well made pack which needs some refinement in order to be really awesome. I ordered this pack on Campsaver thinking that it would be a good sport climbing and mountaineering pack. However, I ended up returning it and getting the Deuter Guide 35+ instead.

This pack is well constructed. They use very durable fabrics and zippers. The main S shaped zipper is pretty neat and very sturdy. It will allow you to access gear stashed anywhere in your pack. It also seems strong enough to resist even the roughest load that you could stuff into the pack. The external and internal pockets allow you to stash small things all over your pack and can really help with organization.

There is so much going on with this pack that it seems to have caused the designers to neglect some of the fundamental features. Perhaps the biggest flaw is that the foam backpanel ends too soon, leaving the bottom seam of the pack to dig into my lower back. This is the main reason that I returned the pack.

There is no good way to carry a climbing rope on the outside of this pack, which seems like a glaring oversight for something that claims to be a mountaineering pack.

There are a number of compression straps and gear chords that each have little "hiding" pockets where you can stash them away when not in use. While I first thought this was a cool feature, I quickly became annoyed with how many different straps there were. Additionally, many of the plastic buckles on the straps seemed very cheap and I felt like they would break the first time I used them. This is especially true of the upper trekking pole/Ice axe loops.

          About MHM

The term "corporate" does not apply to Mile High Mountaineering and it never will. Spending time on the trail and talking to people directly about what they want in a backpack is what inspires the designers at MHM. Their packs do not follow a traditional path either as they bring a new and fresh perspective to the pack world. Using only the best fabrics and an over-obsessive attention to detail has produced what MHM believes to be the best packs out there.
