So I've only had it for a couple weeks, but so far I'm impressed. I'm worried about durability, because that's what's usually sacrificed with weight. However, I've already slid down some snowy slopes and scraped through some spiny patches of devils club, and it's holding up perfectly: down's not leaking, seams are tight. The zipper doesn't inspire confidence, but it's worked just fine so far. And it's so warm that after a couple minutes of wearing it, I'm usually unzipping and pushing up the sleeves. I love it. Treat it with a degree of care, and it will take care of you too.

this is one of the best products out there. It is so ultra light yet seems to have perfect temperature control. I bought this for my husband and it is his 2nd Mont Bell Ultra light. He also has the UL Vest and I have the UL women's sweater/jacket. I would only purchase Mont Bell when it comes to UL jackets. They rock!

  Definitely not waterproof, though the DWR finish will repel some water. I would not wear this parka in a rain or snowstorm without a shell.

Technology Used In The U.L. Down Parka - Men's

Baffled Construction

Baffles are chambers created between the outer shell and inner liner of a sleeping bag or jacket. These chambers hold the insulation and create an even distribution, preventing unwanted grouping of insulation. There are different types of baffles. A "stitched-through" baffle joins the outer shell and inner liner together by means of direct stitching. Heat loss through seams is a disadvantage of the stitched through baffle. Optimal warmth is achieved through the use of a "box wall" style baffle. This method uses additional material between the outer and inner materials to create a wall that unites the two layers and creates a slightly larger and more uniform baffle. Different variations on the box wall positioning create a variety of advanced baffle systems.

Down Insulation

Water foul, like geese and duck, actually provide one of the most efficient forms of insulation available. Down is the light, fluffy undercoating at the base of the feathers of waterfowl. Down is a multi-dimensional structure that insulates by creating pockets of still air that retain body heat. Down is highly breathable and exceptionally comfortable. It is longer lasting and much more compressible than synthetic insulation. A disadvantage of down insulation is its loss of efficiency in wet conditions. It will also take much longer to dry than a synthetic insulation. Down is available in different fill powers. Fill power is defined by the amount of loft that is gained under loft test conditions. The higher the fill power number the greater the loft and the greater the performance of the down insulation. Fill powers may range from 500 fill to 900+ fill power.
