        Comments about U.L. Thermawrap Jacket - Men's:

When I moved back to the Pacific Northwest from Southern California, I initially assumed that I should wear fleece a lot due to its ability to stand up to rain better than down can.

But I read about the various lightweight insulated jackets that are available nowadays. I bought a very lightweight down one, but reserve it for hiking situations where weight and volume are at a premium, and I'll mainly wear it in camp -- and under a rain shell if needed to protect it.

But in the meantime, for day to day wear, I tried it a few times and discovered that the insulated jackets are only a fraction of the weight and volume of fleece, but are warmer -- in particular they block chilly breezes much better than my (non windblock) fleece does.

So I realized that I wanted an insulated jacket for day to day wear in chilly weather. But I didn't want to use my expensive hydrophilic down jacket during a rainy Pacific NW winter, so I got the Montbell UL Thermawrap with its synthetic insulation.

It's been a great choice everything that I wanted. Heavier of course than the down jacket, but probably warmer. The DWR sheds mist and drizzle easily; if heavy rain looks possible I'll make sure to bring along a rain shell.

A couple of minor quirks with the jacket: I always wear size Small jackets, and they're quite roomy for me. The Montbell, though not tight or even snug, does have a closer-fitting waist than any other jacket that I own. I can still easily zip it closed, but there's less slack in the waist than I'm used to.

Conversely, the sleeves are longer than on any of size S jacket that I have. I regard that as a positive because it means that in chilly weather I can draw my hands up so that they're partly warmed by the sleeves. No need to fumble with gloves and put them on, take them off, put them on, etc.

          Comments about U.L. Thermawrap Jacket - Men's:

Having had good success buying lightweight down jackets, but wanting something that would be less vulnerable to rain (so that I could wear it practically every day through a Pacific NW winter) I decided to try the Montbell UL Thermawrap. I'm quite happy with it so far. It's heavier and perhaps a bit less warm, than the down versions, but is still a good deal warmer and lighter than the fleece jackets that I'd been wearing. I haven't worn it during a downpour (and don't intend to, I'd put a rain shell over it), but I have worn it during light drizzly rain and the DWR coating did its job and kept the light rain out.

Fit is an interesting question. I always wear size small jackets, this one has the narrowest waist of any that I've had. I can still zip it without a problem, but there's less slack that what I'm used to. (I'm about a 32 inch waist.)

In contrast, the sleeves are quite long. I think that's an advantage in almost any cool/cold weather jacket, as it makes it easier to keep one's hands warm by simply withdrawing the into the sleeves, without having to put gloves on or reduce one's balance by putting hands in the pockets.

I can't comment on durability because I've only had the jacket for several weeks. Synthetic insulation has a significantly shorter life than down, but it will hopefully be at least a few years before I detect diminished insulating ability in this jacket. It seems to be well-made.

          Comments about U.L. Thermawrap Jacket - Men's:

I typically wear a 42 in jackets/coats. The size chart for large says 41-43, so I figured it would be fine. It was way too snug...I fit in it, but it wasn't comfortable and the pockets pulled funny (because they don't have zippers). I certainly couldn't put an extra layer under, which I imagine I would want to do occasionally.

It was also significantly shinier than the picture on this site.

          Ended up sending it back.
