This has become my go-to jacket for fall, spring and cool summer weather. It is not insulated, so unless you'll be active, it won't keep you warm if temps are below 50 or so. However, with a light mid-layer, it's exceptionally warm. I've worn it in high winds with a light layer underneath, and I've been toasty. I am 6' 200lbs, and the XL is a good fit for me. It's light and compactible, and fits well into my backpack or bag. Highly recommended!

Bombproof Shell!

Unbeknownst to many recent Mammut consumers the Ultimate Pro Jacket has been around for a long time and at one point was a fleece wind stopper. Mammut latest upgrade to this classic peice adds a waffle knit lining, thinner zipper system with new zip pulls, dual cinching hem and a newly designed thumb loop gaiter system. The jacket is now lighter and more weatherproof. I love this jacket for casual urban wear or light duty cold weather hiking. However, the fact that it lacks venting-pit zips, a belay zip, and articulated sleeves makes it less than practical for serious outdoor activities such as climbing sports and mountaineering. I'm also not a fan of the thumb loop system. It makes the sleeves unecessarily longer for the size when the thumb loop is not in use. Also the thumb loop system on a jacket where the sleeves are not articulated (articulated means when you raise your hands above your heads the sleeves and torso don't ride up) doesn't make sense to me. My guess is the original fleece version Ultimate jackets back in the late 1990s and early 2000s were originally made to be zip-in fleece liners for rain shells and used thumb loops to keep the sleeves in place and Mammut didn't want to delete it with the latest version of this jacket. That said this is a great looking and very warm casual jacket for your winter time light duty activities. The price is very steep though for what you get considering many decent gore-tex windstopper jackets start at around $120 USD.

Great Softshell. I bought this to do some mountain climbing next year and for cold weather backpacking. I have used it on some cold early spring backpacking outings and it has worked great. This Jacket with a non cotton base layer kept me warm and dry in below freezing weather. I usually sweat alot hiking with a 50 lb pack. Although I still sweat, I qickly dry out and don't get cold. When I am not doing strenuous stuff in the evening and morning, I need some additional layers to stay warm. This jacket is light weight and packs down small. We got in a down pour one night. We were eating under a tarp but there was a lot of dipping and blowing rain. The jacket did not absorb a drop. It was pricy, but it realy works great. I highly recommend it.
