Winter Action Layer

I used a marmot ether driclime last winter/spring a few times a week for ice climbing and bc skiing. My rab VR alpine is newish, but I feel OK writing a review since its basically the same, just better.

This is an ideal action layer over a light tech shirt like a merino or merino/synth blend. It provides just enough warmth and wind resistance for real alpine winter conditions on the move, but its also breathable and wicks extremely well. The two way zip, velcro cuffs, and roll away hood make this extremely versatile for different weather conditions. The hood is one of the best I've seen. Its easy to batten down and have everything but your eyes and nose tucked behind a soft layer of tricot lining, and pertex.

What makes this better than the driclime is that the hood is adjustable with a brim and its also lined. The pertex equilibrium is also noticeably more breathable. For me the fit is better too. The driclime would ride up when I was making reachy climbing moves, but the rab has longer sleeves.

Also, its worth noting that my size large VR alpine weighs 11.2 oz, not 13oz. This makes it just a touch heavier than the driclime which was 9.5 in a large.

My one issue is with the dual chest pockets. I'd rather they used two hand-warmer pockets placed high like on other rab pieces. I guess the idea is that you can better reach across with one hand while climbing with the dual chest pockets, but I think hand warmer pockets are more generally usable. Looking forward to more cold weather use out of this thing. Will update.
