Don't overlook your snowboard bindings! Worse yet, don't cheap out on them in favor of a stylish outfit that all the cool kids have. Your bindings are just as important as your board. If you want control and comfort while you're riding, you could arguably say that bindings are more important than the board. Since that's a nuanced debate, we'll leave it out and just talk about bindings and let you make up your mind when it comes to Snowboards.image

What are the two types of snowboard bindings?

Aside from some highly specialized bindings, most fall into two main types: strap-in and speed entry/rear entry. Strap-in are more common, and consist of the base plate (the bit you stand on that mounts to your board), the high-back (supporting your heel up to the ankle), the ankle strap (going over the top of the foot), and the toe strap (pretty self-explanatory, going over the top of the toes). Speed entry, also known as rear entry, are bindings that are faster to get in and out of. The high-back is hinged to fold backward when the lock is released, allowing you to get in and out of them while standing (as opposed to the slightly chilly sit-down method employed by strap-ins). Speed entry bindings also allow you to set the straps to a comfortable adjustment at the beginning of the day instead of every time like strap-ins.

Do all snowboard bindings fit all boards?

Unless you're buying a package that includes both, buy your board before the bindings. Most boards have a 2x4 or 4x4 pattern, the numbers indicating the distance between mounting holes in centimeters. The 2x4 allows for more minute adjustments between the bindings. There are some proprietary mounts, too, like the Burton 3Ds or Channel systems. If you already have the board and bindings and they're incompatible, you can find some adapters that will usually solve this problem.
