Haven't used this avalanche shovel yet....God for bid.....just got it for precautionary purposes. Shovel itself is a rigid steel to shovel through hard packed snow or ice. Handle seems sturdy & strong. Wish it had a stowaway handle that compacts. Other wise its a nice ave shovel.
