What is the weight limit for an ascender?

Generally speaking, most ascenders have a weight limit of 100 kilograms or about 220 pounds. All quality climbing gear including ropes, carabiners, ascenders, descenders, harnesses, belay devices, slings, etc. will be marked with the weight limit. If it isn't marked, then chances are it's not safe for climbing and would be better put to use as a keychain. This weight rating does not directly translate to kN (kilo Newton) ratings, which indicate the amount of force a device can withstand in relation to the fall factor.

What is the difference between a pulley and an ascender?

An ascender is typically used to go up a climbing rope in an easier way than alternative methods. This type of climbing is called "aid climbing" because it relies on mechanical aids, as opposed to "free climbing" where you use your hands and feet on the rock wall. They can be as simple as a prusik knot using one or more separate rope loops. You'll usually see mechanical ascenders used in pairs, one for each hand, although others will opt to use only one to keep a free hand for tools like an ice climbing ax. A good example of using ascenders is on a rope that isn't near any handholds and is going straight up. It's very strenuous to attempt to climb it with just the hands and utilize something like a belay device and leg wrap method to slowly go up. Instead, ascenders allow you to slide them up the rope easily, and then it locks when weight is applied in a downward direction, allowing you to pull yourself up. Then you just slide up the ascender and repeat until you reach either the top or a spot where you can utilize handholds.

Pulleys are used to give a mechanical advantage when you're lifting weight. They can also be used to decrease friction on a rope when there are sharp angles from one anchoring point to another. However, a simple pulley is not a locking device that can be used for rope ascension. It's a wheel with a center point and grooves to hold the rope in place. Unless the pulley is designed with extra features like a locking mechanism, it cannot be considered a climbing safety device.

What are two types of pulleys?

The two basic types of pulleys used in climbing are simple pulleys, like those described above, and auto-locking pulleys. An auto-locking pulley acts in the same way as a simple pulley in application, but has an additional locking mechanism that clamps down or "bites" onto the rope so that you don't have to support the weight when pausing to readjust yourself, set a new anchor, or perform another task.

What are the two major types of ascenders?

The two major types of ascenders are handled ascenders and chest ascenders. As the name implies, a handled ascender has a handle to easily grasp it when moving it up the rope. A chest ascender doesn't have a handle, and is rigged through the harness so that it sits at about chest height (again, hence the name). Either is best used with a foot strap so that you're using your legs to move up because they're much stronger than your arms. The technique is to push up with your leg from the foot stirrup while sliding the ascender up the rope, then slide the stirrup up while resting your weight on the ascender, then repeat the steps until you're up where you want to be!
