When W.C. Coleman invented the first gas-powered lantern in 1900, he couldn't have imagined that he'd sparked over 120 years of outdoor innovations. Today, the Coleman name is synonymous with Camping and Hiking. When it comes to tents and shelters, they make small 2-person tents, canopy tents, cabin tents, and just about anything else you can imagine. They've been in the tent business since 1960, and have constantly evolved and improved on their shelter systems as times change and new materials become available.image

Are Coleman tents any good?

For the average casual camper, Coleman tents tend to be a perfect balance between quality and budget. With proper care, maintenance, and storage they'll last for years. The best way to answer this question is to examine what you're looking for in a tent. Level of waterproofing, weight, season rating, and number of occupants all play a part. For waterproofing, look for 1000mm coating and/or their WeatherTec System. Weight will vary a lot depending on whether you're looking for small 2-person tents for backpacking or a huge 10-person tent for car camping. The season rating will usually be 3-season, meaning that it's appropriate for use in spring, summer, and fall but won't stand up to winter conditions. The number of occupants (aka "sleep capacity") can be a little tricky with any brand of tents. If you're going to have a lot of gear, or just need more room for a family tent, always up-size the number of people. For example, a family of four campers should go with a 5- or 6-person tent instead of a 4-person tent. This is because sleep capacity is usually a maximum with no gear, and the occupants sleeping with their heads in opposite directions from one another.

Why are Coleman tents so cheap?

Coleman tents are inexpensive because they use polyester instead of nylon, greatly cutting costs. They also have different sizes of rainflys, depending on what kind of weather you might expect, and a lot of the stock models only cover about half of the tent. Lastly, they use fiberglass poles, which are heavier than a lot of backpacking tents have. However, many owners are quite happy with them and report that they've gotten far more use out of them than they thought they would. You can check out their Coleman Tent Reviews to see what they have to say!

Which Coleman tent is best?

Again, the best tent for you will depend on your needs, and you may decide that you want two tents: a lightweight model for backpacking and a larger model for car camping and/or large groups. However, the most popular Coleman tent is still the Sundome. It's easy to put up, has a lot of thoughtful features, and comes in a variety of sizes. It has a reasonable price tag and is well-suited to casual campers.

Can I use a gazebo as a tent?

It's not a good idea to use a gazebo canopy as a tent. They're designed mostly for shade and light rain, but not much more than that. The open-wall design also means there's no protection from wind or heavy rain. They can also blow over in high winds, even when staked to the ground. That doesn't mean they're useless for camping, though. They're perfect to cover your camp kitchen, keep you in the shade while you relax in camp, or even provide a smoking area.
