Why is it called a visor?

The word "visor" goes back to around 14th century Europe. It's derived from the word "visage", which is an antiquated word for "face". It originally referred to the shield portion of a knight's helmet that covers the face. Over time, it came to describe headwear and devices to protect the face from the sun or small flying objects, not a charging horseback enemy's lance. However, the glass piece over a helmet like those worn by astronauts and motorcyclists is still called a visor, as it protects the head and face.

What is a head visor?

A head visor is best described as a ball cap without a crown (top). They provide shade over the eyes while allowing air to pass over the scalp and cool off the wearer. Most commonly seen in the summer, they're often worn by outdoor enthusiasts and some athletes like golfers. The headband can often work as a sweatband, keeping sweat out of the eyes and doubling the useful aspects of a visor.
