Patagonia's adaptable R2 Jacket serves as a stand-alone outer layer when you're on the go or as a superb insulating layer under a shell. They've worked with Polartec to further refine this exclusive Thermal Pro polyester fabric, now significantly lighter, more compressible and breathable, a touch warmer, and with better stretch and a softer feel. The short-sheared but high-loft face has a smoother appearance, and the directional knit wicks superbly, speeding dry times. Newly added warm stretch panels (Polartec Power Stretch) down the outer forearms and along the sides improve high-wear-area durability and allow for a closer, more mobile fit. With a softly lined inner collar and chin flap for skin comfort, offset shoulder yokes to stay clear of pack straps, and zippered pockets (one chest and two handwarmers).
Features of Patagonia R2 Jacket:
Directionally knit Polartec Thermal Pro fabric is breathable, compressible, wicks moisture and dries quickly; with a superior warmth-to-weight ratio
R1 Polartec Power Dry high/low grid on side panels, underarms and lower torso for improved fit, shape retention and abrasion resistance
Refined technical fit, reduced underarm lift and offset seams for comfort under outerwear and packs
Center-front zipper has Sonic/Stitch seam construction to reduce bulk and improve suppleness; with a soft, kissing-welt zipper garage at chin for next-to-skin comfort
Discreet on-seam thumb loops provide added coverage
One left chest pocket and two high handwarmer pockets have Slim Zip installs, clean-finished zipper garages, and are harness- and pack-compatible; two internal drop-in mesh pockets

The product design is awkward. Paneling creates an odd and unflattering fit in the front stomach area, almost like a pouch. The purple color was the one I purchased and I liked it a lot, but the fit just didn't work.
This R2 jacket gives a longer and more contemporary look than my older R2 jackets but is of a lesser weight and is sized a bit smaller. I moved up from XS to S to get essentially the same fit between old and new versions. The colour is attractive but only time will indicate the durability of this lighter version. I probably will not buy another.
I love my Patagonia, it's cute and comfy and super warm. Just beware getting too warm in it. It doesn't breathe well and if you sweat in it, it will smell!
