The Petzl Summit Ice Axe is designed for the modern practice of classic mountaineering. A result of the expertise acquired over many years, this product applies a new technical approach to this category of ice axes. The curved shaft provides the necessary clearance on steep or icy terrain. The light, forged steel head attached to the shaft ensures minimum weight and maximum efficiency.
Lightweight ice axe, but with enough weight in the head for good anchoring power
Shaft ergonomics: - the upper part of the shaft is curved to offer good clearance when climbing - the lower part is straighter and guarantees efficient penetration in snow
Pick and adze in hot-forged steel, ensuring solid anchoring:- pick is thin (3 mm) and toothed at the tip, ensuring good anchoring qualities in hard snow and ice- pick is thicker in the middle to favor anchoring in soft snow - teeth on upper part of pick strengthen the hold on the ice axe in piolet-rampe mode- durable spike in stainless steel for very good penetration in hard snow and in piolet-canne mode
High strength and practical aspects:- very durable steel adze offers a comfortable support surface, and the design of the edges allows stairs to be carved efficiently- tilted adze directs the axe correctly into the snow (piolet-canne usage)- head and spike equipped with holes for clipping a carabiner or attaching a sling- high-quality aluminum shaft (7075 aluminum, used in aeronautics), with anodized finish for excellent protection-handle is cut into the adze to create a better grip

I bought this axe for a mid-June trip up the mountaineers route to Whitney and used it for every step during the 2,500 ft climb up the chute to the summit, especially the last 400 ft.

I did some detailed research before making this purchase and I settled on the summit Ice Axe because of its design and quality. I did not know how much easier it would be to use than what was expected. My first trip was up the Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route and I needed this axe the whole way during the final 2,500 ft. I was secure and safe, however.
Just like Petzl describes, this axe is clearly the product of the collaboration of experienced mountaineers. Everything seems to be improved in just the way you want it to be. The innovative new design is practical for any application.
