No base camp kitchen is complete without a propane camping stove. Cooking over an open fire is a romantic idea but uneven heating, ashes in your food, and dropping dinner into the coals will spoil that notion pretty quickly. A propane stove solves all of those problems and gives camp cooking a lot more versatility. Isobutane backpacking stoves are great when weight and volume are the primary concern, but a base camp allows you the luxury of having bigger stoves for more elaborate meals and to feed the whole crowd.image

Are propane stoves safe indoors?

Generally speaking, propane stoves are safe indoors when used properly. One of the most important considerations is ventilation, both to avoid the buildup of gases and fumes and maintain a safe oxygen level. Using a propane stove in a very small area like a tent is not recommended due to the fire hazard and poor ventilation. That fire hazard is equal to ventilation since fire can spread much more quickly indoors than out. Also, a propane stove designed for cooking should never be used as a heat source. Of course, always make sure you consult the manufacturer's specifications before using your stove inside (or anywhere else, for that matter).

What is the best propane stove to buy?

When you're shopping for a propane camping stove there are a few things to keep in mind. If you go too small, meals with several different components will take a lot longer since you only have so many burners available. On the other hand, more burners mean more fuel that you need to bring along. Pick a stove that's small enough to store but large enough to feed your crew. Tabletop models can be fine, but most standalone stoves these days have removable or foldable legs for more compact storage and transportation. As far as brands go, there are so many to choose from that we couldn't hope to list them all here. Historically speaking, the Coleman propane stove started out in the mid-1940s and has been evolving ever since. Most competitors have based at least some of their designs on the original Coleman stoves, but that doesn't necessarily make them better or worse.
