Do I need to purchase anything to go with this (straps?), as I'm buying this for my parents as a gift...thanks!

If you would like this to be able to be attached around a tree you will need to buy the Slap Straps. If you are only looking to put it up on anchors it comes with two carabiners already attached to do so.
