Can the sleeping bag compartment be opened out or is it sewn in?

There is a zipper to access the sleeping bag compartment from the outside of the pack. There is also an internal separator dividing the inside of the pack from the sleeping bag compartment, but this can be removed if needed so your backpack is not divided.
