Jonny's Review of Black Diamond Highline Stretch Shell - Men's
I bought this on sale from campsaver, so I won’t return it. If I had paid full price, I definitely would return it. I always wonder with outdoor gear if you can return once worn. Sometimes you don’t find the problems until you use it. With the Highline shell that’s what I discovered. I’m just barely a large 40-42” chest at 6’1, but always go large for the shoulder room. This is snug to almost tight if you’re broader shouldered for your height/weight. Looks good, fits ok. Then actually using it: wanted to be able to later it over a light puffy or fleece. Plenty of room for layering everywhere but shoulders/armpits. I can only layer and have full range of motion if I open the pit zips. Just shoveling my driveway the pit zips chafed at my Cerium Light hoody underneath. I had to open them fully for movement. So 2 problems: tight armpit cut. I feel like everyone thinks a “technical” jacket has to have tight armholes. I get it except when you add pit-zips then the armpit area gets awkward. 2: pit zips. I wish someone would design pit zips that were maybe slightly forward, or behind the armpit area, or otherwise somehow vented without having to have the zipper pass completely through the armpit area as it always seems to cause layering fit or movement problems in this area for me. I could size up to XL but then the body of the jacket would be huge. So on sale: good jacket, I’ll deal with the narrower shoulder/tighter armpit area
Pros:
Material, color
Cons:
Shoulder/armpit fit
Would Recommend:
Yes
