I ordered this as a second choice coat, wanting an expedition more. The expedition turned out not to fit very well in the hip (it's cut rather narrow) and so I returned it and switched to the Dawson because they didn't have the size I needed in the expedition. (The customers service has been quite good so far in the return/repurchase of these coats.) I found that while the Dawson lacks a couple of things I wanted in the expedition (the interior snow skirt, and numerous pockets) that it had a couple of other features that I prefer. The Dawson has a detachable ruff, which I think is a fabulous feature. It makes getting the coat cleaned much easier IMO, and there are also occasions where one might not want to be seen wearing real fur. With the detachable ruff, you have the option to zip it off and leave it home, and still get to wear your coat. This is a huge plus to me. Another plus IMO, are the buttons vs the Velcro on the expedition. It's a personal preference I suppose but I get so tired of picking lint and hairs and dust etc out of Velcro. The Dawson solves that. The same function, without the hassle and it looks pretty smart as well. One more thing that turned out to be great is that the hand warming pockets on the expedition were annoyingly short. You could barely shove your whole hand in, and one would assume in winter you might also be wearing gloves. I'm not sure I could have gotten a gloved hand in the pockets on the expedition. The Dawson has nice deep hand warming pockets, and while it doesn't have as many exterior pockets are the expedition, it does have some nice interior pockets as well. I *might* end up missing those extra exterior pockets, but I doubt I'll miss the snow skirt on the expedition. So the Dawson turns out to be the coat for me! Oh, and the Dawson has side zips on both sides at the bottom, so if you need to crouch or bend, you can open them to gain greater mobility (or let some cool air in if you get a bit over-heated). An excellent parka!
