Perfect daypack - Deuter AC Lite 22 Pack

I bought this pack for a trip to Italy. We packed our clothes in luggage, but this was the perfect pack for our carry-on as it fit in the overhead compartment as well as under the plane and train seats. Because it has a frame that truly creates airflow, my back never got sweaty even on hot days with lots of walking. I took it everywhere, and never got hassled about the size (even at the Vatican).

22 liters is a great size, and the "real" pack features (frame, airflow back, padded straps, hip belt) makes it carry much lighter than those of similar size I saw many other folks dealing with. The fact that the integrated rain cover is connected to the pack and hidden away in a secret pocket makes it easy to use. Even though the pack is ready for it, I did not take a camelback type water bladder, but if it had been a real pack trip I would have, and this is another good reason to choose this Deuter 22L pack.

Last, I'll say that in a high population setting like Rome, DC, New York, Paris, etc... having a true top loader with the cover pouch that clips down (again, because this is a "real" pack and not a bookbag with lots of zippers) creates a more secure environment where a would - be thief on a crowded bus or subway couldn't as easily get to your stuff.
