Bob's Review of Deuter ACT Lite 40 + 10 L Backpack
I bought one of these in Europe while I was hiking 550 miles across Spain on the Camino de Santiago trail and beyond. It replaced a smaller pack I had that was inadequate for my needs. The suspension system of this pack is works very well at transferring the weight off your shoulders and onto your hip belt as long as the load weight is moderate. I carried roughly 30# in the pack comfortably.
Back ventilation is marginal. Not nearly as good of ventilation as the trampoline style suspension but this system does hold the load closer to your back for stability. Don't expect to feel the occasional breeze cross your back. I used this pack in temps that hit 104(F) and rarely were cooler than 80(F) with modest humidity and my back was sweaty all the time.
There are 2 compartments, the upper main compartment is separated from the lower compartment by a zippered panel. This allows you to turn it into a top loading 1 compartment bag if you wish. It also allows you to store dirty items in the lower area to keep them away from clean items in the upper area. Or the lower can be used for a sleeping bag, etc.
The ice axe/trekking pole locks work reasonably well. They have simple loops at the bottom of the pack (no trekking pole locks on the bottom) and there are cinching locks on elastic at the top. There are no locking hooks on the cinching locks like on some other brands (think Lowe Alpine). I did have my trekking poles come loose (but never actually fall off) a couple times with this system, I prefer other brands systems for holding poles.
There is a stretch fabric waist belt pocket that is nice size, the stretch fabric allows it to carry odd shaped objects. But its virtually impossible to zip closed using only 1 hand.
No pockets on the shoulder straps.
There are 2 deep stretch pockets on either side of the pack that easily hold 1.5 Liter water bottles, they are deep enough that its very difficult to get the bottles out, and nearly impossible to get them back in, without taking off the pack. But the pack is bladder compatible if you prefer a bladder.
The stretch pocket on the rear of the pack easily held my rain jacket and rain pants.
Rain cover is NOT included.
