Jewels's Review of Eagle Creek Tour Travel Pack 40L

I have been looking for a carry on travel bag that I can use for one bag travel for a 5 week trip to Europe. And this bag checks all the boxes for what I need. The construction and materials are very high quality and durable. The color and aesthetic is very clean and minimal but cute. Note that the color looks teal blue in the picture with a forest green accent. But the actual color is a hunter green with forest green accent. It's still a nice color but keep that in mind if you were hoping for teal. The bag opens clam shell, like a suit case. Inside is one big compartment and one big zippered pocket on the opening flap. There are also 2 outside pockets on the bag. Note that there is not a lot of internal organization with this bag or different compartments to store things. It's very minimal, which is what I was looking for because I use my own packing cubes. On the back, there is a sleeve for a laptop/tablet. Then a zippered compartment that opens up to reveal the backpack straps. The shoulder straps are nicely padded. There is also a minimal hip belt that is not very padded and a sternum strap. The rainfly is a nice feature though it is not detachable. It folds into a compartment on the back, which didn't feel uncomfortable or like it was digging into my back. I am 5'1" 120lbs and ordered the bag in S/M. I packed it with about 15 lbs and it felt comfortable walking around in. The bag distributes weight well all over my body. However, because the hip strap is minimally, it does not distribute as much weight to your hips. This is not a big deal if your pack is light, but if you have over 20lbs, you may want a bag with a thicker hip belt. I purchased this on Campsaver and the shipping was extremely fast! I got the bag within 3 days of placing my order. I took this bag to REI and tested it against other comparable size 35L-40L travel bags for women (Osprey Fairview, Cotopaxi Allpa, and REI rucksack). The Eagle Creek Tour Travel bag was definitely my favorite among them. Note that this bag is rated as 40L capacity but it feels much smaller, especially against the other 40L bags. It feels more like a 30-35L with the ability to expand 5L. It does not feel as spacious and roomy as other 40L bags, like the Fairview. But I prefer that because a more compact bag will force me to pack less. Overall, I am very pleased with this bag. It's small and cute and will be perfect as a cabin overhead bag. It's comfortable and well made. And if you are petite, it's the perfect size for a person with a small frame.
Pros:
  • Small and compact
  • Lightweight (2.7lbs)
  • Good for small frame
  • Comfortable straps
  • Clean minimal pleasing design
Cons:
  • Minimal hip belt, not much weight distributed to hips
  • Capacity feels less than 40L
  • Minimal internal organization
Best Used for:
  • travel
  • Walking long distances in cities
  • Running to catch trains/planes/busses/ferries
  • Perfect carry on size
