Yes your pot or cup needs to be 3 1/2 inches wide for it to work, but that is the size of the usual stainless steel cup and most pots are bigger.
What makes this the best all around stand is that it easily takes the trangia type burners as well as solid fuel tabs. I've also seen a person use it as a twig stove but its not really meant for that. It weighs very little, is very small and folds up flat. I've used mine for several years and it has held up beautifully. Yes it is minimalistic and so the question is... what else do you really need? Ok maybe in a heavier wind more of a wind screen but not usually.
