MesaGuy's Review of Eureka Singlis Sleeping Pad
I have this pad in both the regular and large size. The large would be better named wide, as they are the same length (78 inches) and the regular is a rather slim 20 inches wide, and the large a more expansive 25 inches typical of the wide range of 25-26 inches for wide sleeping pads. The problem with these sleeping pads is lack of quality control at Eureka! (Johnson Camping), at least as far as their sleeping pads go. These pads the Eureka! SINGLIS UL regular, the Eureka! SINGLIS UL Large, the Eureka SINGLIS Lite, the Eureka SINGLIS ST are all basically the same. Single chamber air pads, with a brass valve, mounted into a nylon plastic or epoxy plastic resin valve seat block, glued to the air pad canvas. They very in color, in a few cases in fabric or weight. They ALL have the same plastic valve seat mount block in one corner, and they all use the same brass valve twist closure. Some have a open foam inflater built into the pad at the other end. I have had no problems with the inflators other than that they are pretty slow, but otherwise they are fine. The problem with these bags is that the brass twist valves can be double threaded, making them impossible to close (and then the pad does not hold air). This happened on a pad straight from the factory, on its first use. The same pad ALSO had a defective glue job on the pad canvas to the plastic valve mount block. The lack of glue meant that there were 3 openings (wide ones, not pin leaks) at the valve seat on this pad. There is NO way that this pad EVER held air in the factory, in test, assuming it even was tested, which I have to assume it was not. Because this could NOT have been missed in test. So either Eureka! does not test all of its pads, or else it ships them even when they fail test. Either way, you should not buy a sleeping pad from a company that is not testing its sleeping pads so that they can hold air. This pad could not even be inflated all the way, it was simply impossible, much less hold air all through the night. And that was true of two separate defects (either of which alone would prevent the bag from ever holding air). Assuming a very generous 1000 to 1 defect ratio, this air pad would have had to be 1 in 100,000 (the entire run ever) of pads for that to be true. It is not true, Eureka! simply is shipping bad product, and then hoping that most people when burned will not call them on it. I have, and I still do not have a replacement air pad, so that is probably a good assumption for the average consumer. Bottom line, buy an air pad from a company that actually tests its air pads before it ships them, and that stands behind the bags with timely customer service. I have not seen either from Eureka! (Johnson Camping) yet. In fact, as the hours and days roll along, I have lost all respect for Johnson Camping, who also makes JetBoil stoves. So, for myself, I am done with Johnson Camping, and I just wanted to warn others off these completely unreliable Eureka! sleeping pads. You do not know what you will get. You might get a good one, but for me, 50% of the units were bad.
Pros:
- Light weight
- Open foam hand over hole inflator works OK
Cons:
- Brass Valves unreliable poor quality
- Glue job on valve seat to pad canvas unreliable
- inflator is hard to use because of the rubber plug attach, but work, just hard to use.
Best Used for:
- Lining Brid Cages. No value for an air pad that does not hold air.
