Katie's Review of Gregory J38 Pack

The Gregory J38 is the older version of the Gregory Jade 38 backpack. I compared both backpacks and think the Jade 38 is the better option. I am 5 feet and 115 pounds and ordered the XS in the J38. This was too small!! I really don't think any female adult is small/short enough for this size. I am returning this pack for the newer version in size Small. Additionally, the hip pockets on the J38 are small (not as small as some Osprey packs, but much smaller than the hip pockets on the Jade 38). The lid that sits on top of the pack is also smaller on the J38 compared to the Jade 38. I want a large lid to put my lunch and snacks and the J38 is too small. The biggest difference are the buttons/clasps on the J38 - they are terrible! They don't hook and unhook easily. I didn't have a problem using the clasps on the Jade 38 but immediately noticed an issue when unhooking all the clasps on the J38. One feature I like on the J38 is that the front compartment opens in a 'U' shape. Therefore the opening is closer to the bottom of the bag which makes the gear more easily accessible. The Jade 38 opening is an 'n' shape - it's definitely still handy to grab gear from the front of the pack, just not quite as helpful as the 'U' shape. However, with the sizing be too small, the clasps being difficult, a small bucket lid and hip pockets, I'd rather have the Jade 38. I was able to find the Jade 38 on another website for $120 (I think the extra ~$25) is completely worth it!

FYI - I'll be using this pack for rock climbing, not backpacking.
