alec m.'s Review of Gregory Z40 Pack
I bought this pack and took it the next week on a 100 mile solo hike through Allegheny National Forest via the North Country Trail. Previously I had used a cheap 50$ pack from amazon.
Pros:
This pack is amazingly adjustable. The amount of strap and ease of use is perfect. I have tried out Osprey and I believe Gregory is the winner here.
It's quite light weight and for its size it can hold a lot. I packed for 6 days with this pack. I strapped my tent and sleeping bag to the bottom since there is no compartment. On shorter hikes i'll put the sleeping bag inside.
The outer compartments are great and very useful. The duffel bag tupe U-zipper is great too if you don't like digging around your pack looking for something.
The hip straps work very well and are decently comfortable. More padding could be nice.
The color (blue) is very sharp looking and the price (~100$) was right.
Cons:
There aren't many cons.
The shoulder straps are quite nice, but after loading 35lbs you definitely noticed the weight after a few hours. But again I was hiking 20 miles a day carrying 35 pounds. Soreness may just be par for the course. The Osprey packs have crazy padding, which I have not hiked with to evaluate.
After 80 miles or so the part of the pack that was in contact with my tailbone became uncomfortable. Not terrible but maybe more padding would be nice for heavier loads.
Conclusion:
The Zulu is the new model and is supposed to be revamped to fix the cons listed above. It was also another 80$ more than the Z40. If money is not an issue it may be worth giving it a shot (but I can't confirm). But at 100$ this pack was excellent and I am planning on using it for quite some time. I'd say 4.5/5 stars.
