AlpeMoney's Review of Gregory Zulu 35L Daypack

Have an old Z series 35L Gregory pack for more than 10 years that started showing its age after taking a lot of abuse every year. Wanted a new backpack for alpine overnights, and preferably one that keeps the back ventilated.
The Zulu 35 is very well made, but feels less sturdy than the old Z35 - guess because lighter materials were used. The total effective carrying capacity is a bit less than the old Z35 probably due to the tensioning frame that makes space between your back and the pack. Enough space for rain gear, sleeping bag, few changes of clothes and food. Probably a small tent can be fitted in too - my classic igloo 3 persons marmot was to big to fit properly, mainly due to the curvature of the back frame.
I am 186 cm tall /6'1" and the medium was riding up on my back despite having the torso measurements within the medium sizing. Ended up returning and getting a large size.
Pros:
  • Ventilated Back Panel
  • Light
  • zipper access to main compartment
  • good quality materials and sewing
Cons:
  • None
