CJ's Review of Kelty Cosmic 40 Sleeping Bag 600 DriDown

I just received this bag yesterday and immediately took it for an overnight to see how it performs. Debated a 4 or 5 star rating, 4.5 is probably more accurate.

It lofts up very nicely for a 40 degree rating. Overall the construction was pretty average, though. One of the baffles has a loose thread on the inside that I will need to knot up. Also, the end of the drawstring going across the neck popped loose during the night rendering it useless. I will accept that as user fault. I find it strange that the zipper draft tube is synthetic filled. They even chose to put their Kelty 600+ Fill Power logo on the draft tube...ironic, anyway. There is no draft collar, which on a 40 degree bag isn't a huge surprise I guess.

The forecast was calling for nighttime lows in the upper 40s. I slept on a 40" piece of RidgeRest with my pack underfoot, sleeping in thin long underwear, a thin synthetic long sleeve shirt, and medium thick wool blend socks. I was never exceptionally warm, although not completely chilled either.

Admittedly, I was pretty bummed on this bag by the morning. I mean high 40's and it's struggling to insulate? Weak. Well, it so happens I get home (2 hours ago) and figure I'd check last night's low on two different weather sites. Whaddya know? It was actually low 30's! Needless to say I'm now thoroughly impressed with this bag. We'll see how it holds up but I'm pretty sure it's a keeper.
