daha's Review of Kestrel 2500 Weather Meter 0825

Other reviews have noted the slow response time of the air/water thermometer. Still an issue with this unit purchased in 2018. Ambient temperature sensor specification is +/- 0.5*C. Checked against 3 other thermometers that are within 0.5*C of each other. The Kestrel is relatively accurate compared to those units if there is adequate air flow around the probe and you are willing to wait a a minute or longer. Kestrel notes airflow of “1m/sec or greater provides fastest response and reduction of insulatiion effect.”

Pressure when compared against a Garmin 78sc was within +/- 1hPa.

Will eventually compare the wind speed sensor against a friends non-Kestrel unit. The non-electrical unit owned has poor resolution and is inaccurate at wind speeds below 10 knots.

Lanyard/case provide functional simple protection. Replaceable impeller, waterproof and floating design are a big plus. Bit cumbersome process for setting reference barometric pressure & altitude. Apparently no sleep or auto-off after a set period of inactivity is a negative.

Primary use will be for monitoring conditions for windsurfing, dinghy sailing and small sailboat cruising. True and apparent wind speed, current barometer reading and pressure trends are the features most needed. Temperature not that important. So 4*s. 5*s if the temperature response was quicker.
