Steve K's Review of Kuhl Burr Jacket Lined - Mens

This jacket has a great casual, outdoorsy, moto-influenced, and utilitarian look with an edge.

I'm 6 feet tall, 44" chest, and 205 lbs with an athletic build, meaning my shoulders are wider then my belly and hips. I bought the jacket in XL and the fit is perfect. Wearing with a heavy chamois or flannel shirt the jacket is not snug, but it is fairly form fitting for my body type. There is still enough room to layer a light sweater or fleece. The body of the jacket does not "puff" out and the sleeves are somewhat form-fitting - giving the jacket a slim profile.

The cotton shell is a soft canvas weave, but tough, and the lining is quilted. The fleece trim is off white with black flecks. The zippers are sturdy YKK and each sleeve has 2 snaps at the cuff for sizing.

I bought the espresso color and it is deep dark brown, but not black. The stitching is lighter and subtly contrasts.

The outside chest pocket is deep enough for a "plus sized" phone or big wallet, but probably not both at the same time. The interior pocket (which is on the right side - good for lefties, but not my preference) is generous and handles a big phone, wallet, keys, and probably a few more odds and ends.

As many others have pointed out, the hand pockets are a little shallow. They are big enough to put my hands in, but not roomy. They zip up, so they are useful in that regard.

For my use - casual-wear, non-manual labor (or only light work), commuting on days down to 35 degrees (or cooler with an added layer) his jacket is great. For my personal style this jacket goes with jeans or business casual.

Side note - I do a fair amount of hiking, and I would not use this jacket for hiking, it's too form fitting to be comfortable for a strenuous a day-long hike with a day-pack, and although it sheds light rain, I would not trust it to keep me dry in a sustained rain. From an outdoors use perspective - this would be OK for a casual walk in the woods.

Overall this jacket is excellent and I recommend.
Pros:
  • Build quality, style, and fit.
Cons:
  • Shallow hand pockets, inner pocket on the right side.
Best Used for:
  • Casual, commuting, bumming around.
