Tyson Kamp's Review of Mammut Base Jump Advanced SO Pants

I have used the once so far. Hiked from 6.8k to 9.2k in 35 F degree or so weather, windy at the top, very comfortable. Slept in the tent then got up and hiked up to 10.4k in maybe 32 degrees and 30-40 mph wind with higher gusts. On day two with lightweight wool base layer I was fine. I also caught them a few times with the crampons and they are pretty durable. No issues with the pockets and I'm glad they all have zippers. The thigh pocket on the right side is handy for holding tent stakes and guy lines setting up the tent in cold and windy weather. The rest of the time I used that pocket quick access to odds and ends like gloves and a pocket knife. I think the pants are a little more wind resistant and warmer than standard schoeller only pants, but I would avoid these if it was going to be much over 45 degrees. My comments assume high output activity, as you'd freeze in these sitting around in 35 degrees. Great purchase and I would recommend. I'm 5' 10" and 185 lbs, and I bought the 34" and they fit well.
Pros:
  • Reinforced material near ankles, good for crampons. slightly warmer and more wind resistant than standard schoeller-only pants. Great mobility.
Cons:
  • None
Best Used for:
  • MOUNTAINEERING
  • back country skiing
Would Recommend: Yes
