Sue K.'s Review of Marmot Kompressor Plus Backpack
I've used this for a 10+mile day hike, several shorter hikes (1-5miles), schlepping around cities for the day, travel in general (overnight trip or just wanting to have a packable daypack just in case i needed more room on a longer trip). I like it and will keep it but I'm still looking for a few features for a more versatile and well-ventilated daypack of similar size (12-20L).
Pros: lightweight; easy to roll up when the thin foam backpad is taken out or easy to lay flat with the thin foam backpad still in; top of the hood appears to be made of a different material than the rest of the pack and is very water resistant if not water proof; well thought out lashes and straps but not so many that it's cumbersome; can use with or without a water bladder; the waist strap is just enough to keep the pack comfortably on my back and in place even when i jog lightly with it somewhere.
Cons: my back gets extremely sweaty with or without the foam back insert, even for short jaunts, be it a 30 min hike or a quick public transit commute or walk through an airport when traveling; you can only cinch it down so much so if you really don't have enough stuff to moderately fill the bag, it will stay loose; the elastic in the side pockets leave something to be desired- can't adjust at all, so a couple of my taller and smaller water bottles fall out frequently; when not using the waist strap, it either dangles around if you don't readjust it or tie it up.
features I'd have loved:
-i wish the front buckle system that clips the lid to the main pack were designed so that the pack could be cinched down more from top to bottom. even at the shortest adjustment, if you don't have enough stuff in the pack, the pack is too loose.
-wish for more height of the side pockets, and better elasticity and/or adjustable top elastic
-waterproof all the way around
-something i rarely find in any pack but always wish i had: full side zip access to the main compartment! top load is great for its own reasons, but why not have both top and side access for when i need to quickly find something stuffed in the bottom or middle of the pack.
-better back ventilation (would sacrifice slightly more weight and rigidity/less packability for this because it's hard to want to wear this pack for too long when it makes me so sweaty).
