Dutch's Review of Marmot Tungsten UL Tent - 3 Person, 3 Season
Everything I wanted in a tent. I use this for backpacking trips with my fiance and golden retriever. For its very modest weight (4 lbs), it gives a luxurious amount of space: a full 60" x 90". The bend in the poles is genius...we're both over 6', and the heads and feet of our sleeping bags don't even touch the mesh walls. Two can easily sit up to play cards and change.
Intuitive and easy set-up...straightforward even in the dark. This tent has been through a number of heavy showers and thunderstorms, and the inside has always stayed perfectly dry. I really like that the sil-poly fly stays tauter than silnylon. Thus far condensation has been a nonexistent. It's been stable in winds, though I have yet to test in in exposed locations in heavy, gusty storms. The two doors are a nice convenience. The vestibules are handy and decently-sized for careful cooking. The 2-way zippers on the fly are a great touch.
Me being picky: 1) One trade-off with UL tents is the delicacy of the fabrics. My dog panicked in one thunderstorm and managed to rip the floor with his claw. Easy repair, and to-be-expected with lightweight fabrics. I'll gladly undertake the occasional repair in exchange for the weight-savings (Marmot supplies adhesive-backed ripstop repair tape color-matched to the tent. Very nice touch.) 2) Marmot supplies only 6 stakes. That's adequate, but to properly stake out the tent for rain, you're much better off with 8. As with any tent, you'll want even more anchor points (stakes, trees, or rocks) in big winds. 3) On my tent, you have to max out the cinch straps to get the fly nice and tight...it would be nice to have some margin to tighten further, if the fly ever stretches out. 4) the triangular shape of the mesh pockets makes it easy for stuff to fall out of them.
This tent is my new go-to 3-season backpacking tent. Stupid-easy setup, tight pitch, dry, and very comfortable for tall people. Luxury for two. Easily doable for two plus dog. Campsaver is always great to purchase from. I own a Big Agnes solo tent. This Marmot was easily a hundred dollars less than a comparable BA 3P UL model, and I feel it loses nothing to it.
