Earl D.'s Review of Merrell Moab Ventilator Hiking Shoe - Mens
I am hard to fit for shoes. My feet are two different sizes, and run wide - 4E for most New Balance lasts. I needed some hiking shoes that were light and breathable, so I looked at these. I was hesitant to order these Merrells for a few reasons, First, of course, was the question of whether they ould be wide enough. "Wide" for most manufacturers/brands is pretty narrow for me. I also have a high instep. Since I wouldn't be able to try these on before purchase, I'd have to take a flyer.
Next, I wanted a show that had a very grippy, "sticky" outsole. With a mobility disability, I need all the support I can get. In the past I've bought shoes that supposedly were grippy, but were not.
Finally, I have a friend who had purchased a pair of Merrell hiking boots that "feel apart" (her words) quite soon after purchase; she vowed to never buy another pair of Merrells. I discount such single accounts, but always keep such reports in the back of my mind.
After mulling over whether to order, I pulled the trigger and took advantage of a sale price.
When I tried them on, getting my foot in was a bit tight due to the design, so I thought "un-oh". But once I got my feet in, I could tell the width was just right. The rest of the fit was fine as well - the shoes cradled my feet securely. Maybe a just a tad tight, I thought, but when I laced them up and walked around, I was satisfied these shoes would be keepers.
The bonus was that the sole is VERY sticky and grippy. It gives me an extra bit of confidence in walking. When I go to Paris these will be my daily wear to negotiate the streets and sidewalks that are often cobblestone or other stone that can be slick, especially after a rain.
I will have to wait until Summer to find out how breathable and cool these wear when it's very hot.
The only negative I have discovered concerns the laces. They are short and too slick. They are long enough to be tied, of course, but because the material is slick, the knot becomes untied easily. Double-knotting is possible but difficult. I would recommend they be about 2-4 cm longer as is to make double knots easier, or have a rougher surface texture. Or both.
I'm glad I found these, and will probably order another pair down the road.
